Dementia Star™ Program

Comfortable Conversations To Educate & Raise Awareness

Shifting Dementia Care To Improve Lives

Welcome to our Dementia Star™ Program. We want to give you a little background on why this program was developed as it will give you great insights as to the importance of Dementia Star.

For years our founder, Lori La Bey struggled when caring for her mother living with dementia for thirty years. It didn’t seem to make a difference if it was family, friends, healthcare professionals or community businesses or services; little support was available. She found education and awareness was slim pickings. A true acceptance and understanding of dementia were far from common knowledge.

Disconnect To Reconnect

What Lori did find, was a total disconnect via lack of communication and education between; those living with a diagnosis, their family and friends, healthcare professionals and general community services or businesses. There was, and still is in most cases a fear of having an open and honest conversation regarding dementia. There continues to be an unwillingness to understand and accept that the best people to learn from about dementia are those diagnosed and those caring for them.

People In the Trenches Are Walking Encyclopedias

People in the trenches are walking encyclopedia filled with knowledge just waiting to be heard. They are so appreciative of being included in the conversation that matters to them the most. They are eager to give a hand to support others on this journey. Their understanding is through the actual lived experience.

Sustainable Change Requires Inclusion

La Bey believed at her core that sustainable change in dementia care would never happen if as a society we didn’t start including all voices in the conversation. So, in 2009, she switched careers to step into this industry to change how the world looks at and deals with dementia. Since then, she has learned so much by embracing this concept of inclusion.

Breaking One Belief Barrier at a Time

Lori has broken one belief barrier after another; pushing the globe forward in thinking what’s possible and who is a resource when it comes to dementia. She launched the first Dementia Friendly Community in the United States. Other first of its kind ventures; are her radio show Alzheimer’s Speaks and Dementia Chats giving voice to those diagnosed. Lori has connected with families, businesses, government agencies, researchers, and advocates around the world.
