Lori La Bey, founder of Alzheimer’s Speaks facilitates a conversation and is amazed by every conversation what she learns about life with dementia. She encourages everyone not only to watch these videos, but to include those living with dementia in conversations and to listen closely to their insights. They know dementia better than anyone.

We would love to here your thoughts and comments on this tip.
Yesterday I had a conversation with a manager of a housing scheme that uses carers. When I asked if the carers have had dementia training and what kind, I was stunned by the reply… He replied they are asked, not told, but asked to do an online course, and if they wish to know any more than that, they can apply to management or look it up themselves. I KID YOU NOT!! I was almost lost for words but when the enormity of what he had just said hit me I couldn’t hold back, I politely replied, SO? You leave it up to them? with no Guidance? with no official training of dementia in place, if they decided that they can’t be bothered, or don’t have the time then they just carry on in ignorance? Don’t you as a manager have a duty of care to train these wonderful people up the right way to make sure they are safe in their workplace and can handle most situations with ease and experience, rather than them panicking or running around trying to figure out what to do when someone who has dementia has a meltdown?? Do you know what his answer was??? “Good point, I will take it up with My manager………. Guys? I No words, well, none that I can print anyway, and yes the offer of training was made by myself but I won’t hold my breath, and there’s me thinking we had come so far away from things like this in recent years

Yes, it is hard to believe how things vary in healthcare.
