My Favorite Things… Julie Andrews Myth or Not It’s Funny!
A friend just sent me this. Who knows if the urban legend is true or not but what a fun piece!
The Urban Myth is that Julie Andrews sang this at her 69th Birthday—enjoy!
Maalox and nose drops and needles for knitting
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings
Bundles of magazines tied up in string
These are a few of my favorite things
Cadillacs and cataracts and hearing aids and glasses
Polident and Fixodent and false teeth in glasses
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings
These are a few of my favorite things
When the pipes leak
When the Bones creak
When the knees go bad,
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don’t feel so sad
Hot tea and crumpets and corn pads for bunions
No spicy hot food or food cooked with onions
Bathrobes and heat pads and hot meals they bring
These are a few of my favorite things
Back pains, confused brains, and no fear of sinnin’
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinnin’
And we won’t mention our short shrunken frames
When we remember our favorite things
When the joints ache, When the hips break
When the eyes grow dim
Then I remember the great life I’ve had
And then I don’t feel so bad
What a fun takeoff of a favorite song – perfect for all of us boomers and seniors, and particularly those of us in the Sandwich Generation, caring for the elderly parents and relatives in our lives who are dealing with this as we, too, start having these issues. Thanks for fun smile.
HI Kaye
Glad you enjoyed it. I smiled all the way through reading it too!

Hi Lori,
I just got a chance to read this by Julie Andrews and so related to it…lol…especially about the needles for knitting…lol. That is my new hobby.
I really enjoy it. I would love to send you a knitted scarf to deal with this brutal cold weather!!!
Hope you are well and your mom is happy, safe and pain-free. I also loved the pictures of your mother on her birthday.
Just wanted to say hello and as always, thinking about you. I am coming up on my mother’s 2nd year anniversary. So many things I wished that I could have said and so many things I wish that I could have done. But the one thing that I will always cherish is the connection that I made with her telling her that I loved her. To some…it might seem a simple thing to say, but when you encouraged me to tell my mom how I felt, a weight was lifted off me. I hope you will always be able to keep up the good work and continue being an advocate for patients and their families who are struggling with this disease.
Continue to enjoy the time with your mother and take care of yourself.
Love,
Sheri
HI Sheri
It’s so wonderful to hear from you! I think of you and your Mother often. I don’t know if you saw my later response to your last message. I’m not sure how it got lost in things but it did. I really thought I had replied to your comment. I felt awful I didn’t. I must not have hit save.
Mom B Day Party turned out nice with most of the family being able to make it. She is doing as well as possible and for the most part is happy, safe and pain-free from what we can tell. I’ve been trying to capture her on video more and am taking lots of pictures. It brings me such a sense of peace to have these. I’m amazed how often I look at them and share them with people.
So you are a knitter now are you? How nice. I wish I could do something like that. I don’t seem to be able to sit still long enough as I have so many irons in the fire all the time. LOL
If you are serious about the scarf I would love that! I wear them all the time. It would be such a nice comforting reminder of our friendship. I don’t think I will ever forget how we met and your willingness to be so honest and brave with your Mother. Your story is so powerful. Every Halloween I remember running back to my computer after my conference to see how you did with your visit to you Mom. There I sat crying as I read your wonderful story. It always makes me smile and brings a tear to my eyes when I think about it. So precious!
Well I better getting running…
Take care As always you are in my thoughts and prayers
Lori
Hi Lori,
Glad to hear from you!
Great to hear that you and mom are doing well as can be. I am very serious about that scarf. Just send me an address and I will get started on it very soon. I’m pretty good, if I must say so myself…lol What is your favorite color? And like you mentioned earlier, it will be a nice reminder of the friendship that we have developed.
Just so thankful that mom is resting and peace 🙂
When you get a moment, please send me your address. I believe you have my e-mail address. Hoping to hear from you soon.
Love,
Sheri
Oh Sheri I am so excited! I’ll send you my address right now. How nice of you!!!! I can’t wait. a scarf from you is going to be so precious to me. Glad to hear you are doing well.
Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
Julie Andrews, a beloved mentor to me and wonderful person who has been a great inspiratation to me throughout my own theatrical career. She is in beautiful shape and spirit. This take-off is so brilliant and delightful!!!!
However in my experience of counseling and working with older adults and as one who is blessed to be able to grow a little older one day at a time, I believe firmly that when one takes really good care of oneself in mind, body and spirit: eating well, working out daily and maintaining a positive outlook on this life we are blessed to have, we can be spared experiencing some of the infirmities this funny take-off mentions!!
