Need Your Help For One Of Our Readers Young Children and Alzheimer’s

This is a comment from one of our readers, Gina.  If you can offer some support or guidance please respond to this post.

“I feel really desperate to speak to anyone in a similar situation. My husband has early onset, he was diagnosed just over 2 years ago. He is now 60. We have a young family, children between the ages of 5 -12 years. I am finding it harder and harder to cope with as he has got worse. Each child is struggling with their fathers illness. So far I haven’t had much support with this as where we live, quite rurally the adult services and childrens services don’t seem to cross over. I haven’t yet met anyone in the situation we are in and neither have our local agencies. Please be in touch if you can share experiences.”

  1. Please read “Learning To Speak Alzheimer’s” by Joanne Koenig Coste. She also dealt with young children and a husband with Alzheimer’s. I bought the book on Amazon.com but it may be available at your local library. The Alzheimer’s Association and Alzheimer’s Foundation of America have toll free numbers to support groups and/or Social Workers. You are not alone. I know it feels like you are but there are many others navigating this journey as well. Please look for Memory People on facebook, they also offer wonderful advice and support.

  2. I may be able to at least connect with her. I know it’s hard when you have kids. my kids are now 16 and 18, but hubs was diagnosed 2 years ago at age 46, the kids were 13 and 15. Not as young as her kids, but at least close. I am also in touch with another woman with younger kids and hubs with Early Onset. It’s a whole different set of needs and help we need!

  3. Dear Gina,

I host a wonderful support group on facebook for dementia caregivers, @ http://www.facebook.com/caregiving. We have hundreds of caregivers post on our page and would love to have you join us. I cared from my husband in-home for about 15 years… I don’t think you will be sorry. We rant, rave, snivel, whine, laugh, brainstorm, share…what ever fits the bill. We look forward to meeting you. hugs
