  4. this is a very important topic that has really helped my dad, thank you for sharing. i have tried several strategies, two drugs, vitamins, exercise and music has also been quite helpful. we saw a presentation at the alzheimers association meeting a few weeks ago on music therapy for memory and purchased CDs to calm my dad during the day and while sleeping. there is a website the speaker talked about called http://www.musictherapyformemory.com, that has music activity and education programs. classical and other familiar songs that dad use to listen too have really made dad more upbeat

    1. HI Betty

Thanks for writing and telling me about this product. I contacted them and asked if they were interested in sending me a free sample to review, but apparently they are not interested. They said I could buy one, which I don’t do when I review products. Too bad they don’t see the value in having their product reviewed and pushed out to those in need. Oh well. I always donate products I review after I write the article… Maybe I just didn’t connect witht he right person at the company. It’s common practice to send free samples to reviewers.

Please let me know of any other resources you liked though. I always appreciate hearing about them from those who actually use them! 🙂

  5. Hello Lori, thank you for your reply! My dad is 86 and was diagnosed two years ago but I recently needed to get more involved. the best resource ive found to learn more has been the Alzheimer’s Association and their sponsored support group (http://www.alz.org/apps/findus.asp). They helped me find a part-time aide to help me on week days who is very sweet. Their conference they had this year was great. the founder of alzheimers research gave a talk and i also saw a speaker there named Dr. Troxel and bought his nice book on the best friends approach to alzheimers (www.hcibooks.com). I went to the music therapy demonstration (i just went to the website and you can request a free sample there, it comes by email, try to contact the speaker perhaps Mr. Berger? he seemed very friendly and nice). I saw another speaker with him named Dr. Isaacson, he has family members too with Alzheimers and wrote a new book on treating and preventing it that I have now read cover to cover. its very encouraging and has given me new ideas about what i can do for my dad and also what i need to do for myself (www.theadplan.com). Ive also read the 36 hour day which came highly recommended (i bought on amazon.com) and is essential for us all i think.
i really appreciate that you provide this forum for us to discuss and share ideas. i watched the video of Rick Phelps before and it really is a blessing that he can share this message with us all.

    1. HI Betty

It is great to hear you are finding some resources that are helpful to you. I like you think the Alzheimer’s Association is a great resource. I missed their conference here in Minnesota where I live as I was speaking at a conference in Montana to their Healthcare Associaiton.

Best of luck to you and your Father on this joourney. Please feel free to write anytime.

      Lori

  6. Just found a great therapy for helping those with Alzheimer’s to remember names and faces. Journeys2remember.com is selling a therapy called photographic journeys. We placed an order this morning and will post a note after we get the package.
