Let’s Go Waterskiing: A Story Of Dementia Communication

The clip below is from an interview on The Dementia Collective podcast, with host Andrew Karesa, founder of blueBell Village. Lori La Bey, the founder of Alzheimer’s Speaks, was his guest. Lori shares a story in this short video about how she was able to listen intently and follow the guidance she received, even though, logically, it made no sense at all. Lori felt it was impossible to think this notion had even a small chance of working, but the pain she was feeling, along with her mother living with dementia, made it worth a try, as she knew of no other options.

Lori encourages people to try alternative methods to overcome fear and create calm when logic doesn’t work. So often, both families and staff hesitate, feeling that telling a lie or participating in a storyline that never happened is the correct mode. She encourages people to look past something that we frame as right or wrong, and shift to a mindset and heartset of what will bring back calmness and happiness to the person they are caring for, as long as it does not harm anyone.
