The International End of Life Doula Association (INELDA) seeks to encourage the use of end-of-life doulas in a variety of settings, including hospice facilities, hospitals, private practice, and communities in need of end-of-life care. INELDA trains end-of-life doulas to serve dying persons and their loved ones with support and comfort beyond the usual boundaries of institutionalized care. The organization is committed to eliminating the inequities that exist in end-of-life care and to making end-of-life doula services relevant and accessible to everyone, regardless of their background. Currently the largest training body for doulas and organizations providing end-of-life services, INELDA offers training, mentoring, and certification programs for end-of-life doulas in support of its mission: changing the face of dying. To date, INELDA has trained over 3,800 end-of-life doulas (sometimes referred to as death doulas) from the U.S., Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Australia, Hong Kong, and the U.K. The organization maintains a database of INELDA-trained doulas, searchable by geography, to help connect those seeking end-of-life services to qualified doulas. The end-of-life doula concept emerged in the U.S. following the growing popularity of birth doulas. INELDA co-founder and executive director Henry Fersko-Weiss was an early pioneer of the death doula movement, adapting the birth doula model to end-of-life care within the hospice setting at the turn of this century. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization was established in 2015.
